RE: Direct SQL Updates (DSU's) Slow with VPD

Brian -

I thought you were talking about another VPD on top of the standard
access for the domain. The servprov domain is a little different. You
likely won't be able to do away with it. I'm not sure what Oracle
recommends, but perhaps the role set up could be on the servprov domain,
with the VPD as default. If that's possible, you would have to then
utilize various methods of restriction to make sure the servprov only
sees what they should. A few other things to try:

1) Assigning functions to the level in question
2) Action checks that are assigned to the specific servprov's user ID
and will only allow the user to view a shipment if it meets certain
criteria, i.e. the servprov's ID. If you go that route, the sql needs
to be efficient so there is no performance degradation.
3) I'm not sure how you've modeled your screen sets, but I would think
you would be able to accomplish servprov shipment restrictions by
utilizing the default tab of the screen set to return only specific
results based on the servprov ID. The downside is that the servprov
would require their own screen set.
4) menu and manager layout modification
5) xsl screen modification

There are watch outs for those suggestions, but they are effective. I
would definitely check out the sql statement per Dan's recommendation
first.

Let me know if you need further help.

Regards,

Marnie

Hi Marnie

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm not completely familiar with VPD but we haven't done much more than
the standard domain security. We only have one main domain along with
Public and Servprov.

I guess I have a couple of questions then.

Can we switch of VPD and still get the Servprov restrictions ie. so
service providers can only see there shipments?
Can you give some hints on what approach you've used? We are
restricting users via menu and screen set restrictions?

Brian -

I agree with Dan. We at Kraft have experienced a similar issue, but
have been successful with a different approach to security. Can you tell
me a little about what you're trying to do with your VPDs?

Very much could be because of the VPD. You can turn on SQL logging to
see the resultant SQL statement.

Has anyone had problems with direct sql updates run through an
automation agent?

We have examples which run fine in SQL developer but when the same SQL
is run through automation it runs very slowly, these seems to be related
to VPD security?
