[SOLVED] Using Routing Rules

Hi All,

I was trying to use the routing rules in my planning process, but could
not achieve the desired behavior. Below is what I wanted to do:

1. Have two Rate Records between point A and B. These rate records
belong to different service providers (say S1 and S2).
2. For my Ship From Location, I wanted to use service provider S1
always even though the rates of S2 are cheaper.
3. I setup a routing rule at Organization with Location as my Ship
>From location. I have specified the lane in this routing rule and the

service provider S1 has been attached to this lane.
4. Now when I do the bulk planning, the shipment is created with
service provider S2. My preferred service provider is not selected.

I am not able to understand how to achieve this. I would appreciate it
if anybody can tell me what I am missing here. I am at version 5.5.

Regards,

-Salil

RE: Using Routing Rules

Salil -

I know the business scenario that you are trying to accomplish can be done using Rate Preferences. They allow the system to select the rate for carrier S1 instead of carrier S2 even though S2 is cheaper as long as both of those carriers are the same mode.

This can also be done using Rate Quality Factors, but can have unwanted results if you are performing bulk planning and rate shopping across modes.

Hope this helps,

Re: Using Routing Rules

I would be looking at rate quality factors for this scenario. I have used them in a few implementations and they should work fine for what you are looking to achieve.

I am not sure that routing rules were ever designed to accomplish this kind of operational planning scenario.

An alternative, if you know that each order coming out of a location should be shipped with a specified service provider, is to enforce that as a constraint on the order release. You could do that with a Direct SQL update agent at the time of order release / order base creation.

RE: Using Routing Rules

To take the last suggestion one step further, and this may or may not
work for your business, is looking at the geographical hierarchies of
the rates in question. If the more expensive rates have a more specific
geo hierarchy (you determine the hierarchy as well), they will be chosen
over the less expensive rates. It's easier to maintain and trouble
shoot later.

There are several ways in OTM to solve this problem.
You could specify the carrier on the leg in the itinerary, you could use
rate factors, you could set up the planning parameters to look at other
factors besides cheapest cost.

All depends on how it will impact planning on other orders.

RE: Using Routing Rules

Right. This idea is in conjunction with the last suggestion in the
previous email. After the parameter is set, this set up does have the
desired effect, and it's done without maintaining Rate Factors.

you would need to turn on planning parameters for OTM to consider rates
at all geo-hierarchies for that to work. OTM out of the box (at least
prior to 5.5) took most specific lane over the more generic.

RE: Using Routing Rules

Hi All,

My personal thanks to Marnie, Rick, and bmj_23 for taking time out and
helping me with this scenario. The discussion gave me insights about the
ways we can achieve this in OTM. I will work on these lines.

Regards,
-Salil

Re: Using Routing Rules

Hi,

if it is always just S1 for the particular SRC-location, wouldnt it be the easiest solution to constraint the location to the service provider ? So only allow that dedicated SP to work with the location....
